Music

Students are immersed in a vibrant, diverse world of music at St Mary of the Cross. They read, listen and move to music, and sing, perform and create music using a variety of classroom instruments. Students investigate and celebrate the importance of music in cultures around the world, including those of Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and learn about beat, rhythm, melody, tempo, dynamics, form and style.

Students learn to analyse techniques used by composers and musicians to evoke images, moods and ideas, and incorporate these into their own compositions. They identify and classify orchestral instruments, and explore ways in which non-orchestral instruments produce sound and are incorporated into the music of traditional cultures.

Music lessons are prepared in accordance with the Victorian Curriculum (v2.0) and integrate listening, reading, movement, performance, analysis and composition in engaging, meaningful and holistic ways.
