Mathematics

The Mathematics block at St Mary of the Cross is structured around research-based practices that emphasize explicit teaching principles and current best practice for mathematics. Lessons are guided by the Victorian Curriculum 2.0 and incorporate a Daily Review, which involves a brief recap of previously taught content to reinforce learning through spaced and interleaved practice. New mathematical concepts are introduced through clear and direct instruction, where students have frequent opportunities to participate through checks for understanding and guided practice. After the explicit instruction occurs, students are given the opportunity to engage in independent practice. Tasks are carefully adapted to ensure all students are supported or extended as needed through the practice of differentiation. A particular emphasis at St Mary of the Cross is placed on developing strong number skills, especially in the areas of place value and operations through additional practice of number facts.
