Learning Diversity
At St Mary of the Cross, we recognise that each student brings unique life experiences and personal attributes to their education journey. The diversity of student learning includes academic, behavioural, communication, engagement, spiritual, interpersonal interactions, health and wellbeing.
Our staff aims to nurture, support and encourage each student to pursue their personal best and move closer to realising their full potential. We are committed to understanding individual differences, and designing instruction and adjustments that foster ongoing learning and growth for every student.
St Mary of the Cross provides a variety of support for students of all ability levels, including those with learning challenges, disabilities or high potential. Students with diverse learning needs also include those who have recently arrived in Australia, learning English as a second language, as well as those with an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander background.
As learning needs change over time, support may range from short-term educational and/or social adjustments to ongoing interventions tailored to students’ developmental growth. Students may be supported within their learning space or withdrawn from class, depending on the intervention.
Classroom teachers draw on their professional judgement, student progress data and assessments to address individual needs. They adapt strategies and make reasonable adjustments while implementing evidenced-based learning and teaching approaches within their learning environments..
When necessary, individual or small group interventions are carefully considered in collaboration with school leaders. This ensures students receive targeted support that aligns with their individual needs, helping them maximise their learning potential and achievements.
